Tanned Fur Program

Fur is one of the oldest forms of clothing we know.  It is exceptional for its warmth, durability, and beauty.  And it is a renewable resource.  The South Dakota Trappers Association is proud to participate in the fur industry, which is fully compatible with the principles of wildlife conservation and the wise use of our natural resources.
.
Many of our members generously donate a portion of their harvest to the SDTA. Some are put up and some are not. We accept ANY donations. After all furs have been put up and are ready for tanning we send them off to the tannery. These furs are then sold at events such as the Black Hills Stock Show and numerous Dakota Territory gun shows.
.
The funds raised from these sales are vital to the various programs the SDTA supports such as the scholarship, youth education, South Dakota Rodeo Queens programs to name a few. Without these funds we would not be able to support these programs adequately.

Your donations to the tanned fur program have been a big shot in the arm to many of our other programs and we thank you! This year with low fur prices please consider donating those furs to the SDTA. Believe it or not we need your possums and skunks! We are currently looking into having a presence at the Sturgis Rally. Two Directors have contacts in the area and we could end up there someplace, some how. Think about it.....300-500K people from around the country (world even) come to the Rally. The chance for us to get our message out, the GREAT things you our members do, and educate people on BMPs before antis do is an opportunity we must explore. Having a large and varied inventory of furs to catch their eye and draw them in is a must. I attend many of the "fur pickup spots" that long distance buyers announce. I have picked up a lot of furs there for the SDTA from people refusing to sell furs for rock bottom prices. I also hand out membership forms! Keep in mind those low value or off colored furs (red coyotes for example) have value supporting our programs!
